A significant proportion of the population (60-85%) will experience low back pain in their lifetime, often caused by natural wear and tear of the spine. As we age, our vertebrae, discs, joints and ligaments all wear out, which in most cases can lead to lower back pain. Osteoporosis can aggravate these complaints.
Balneotherapy (spa treatment) and physiotherapy are particularly effective in treating chronic low back pain. There are many studies showing that these procedures can reduce pain, improve mobility and quality of life, especially in older patients. Weight-bathing, for example, helps to relax muscles and stretch the spine, thereby reducing the pressure caused by herniated discs. The warm water is particularly beneficial because the pleasant sensation makes the muscles relax more easily, making the treatment more effective.
