The best-known autoimmune inflammation of the joints is rheumatoid arthritis, which affects 1% of the adult population and is three times more common in women. The disease is associated with chronic inflammation, pain and limited mobility of the joints, causing significant deformities and reduced mobility in the long term.
The best known metabolic disease causing arthritis is gout, which is caused by uric acid crystals precipitating in the joints. It affects 1.6% of the population and is seven times more common in men. Chronic gout leads to permanent joint deformities and damage to other organs (kidneys, atherosclerosis).
Seronegative spondylarthropathies are a heterogeneous group of diseases that often cause arthritis. This group includes arthritis that is associated with certain intestinal conditions (e.g. Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis) or skin conditions (e.g. psoriasis), or can also develop after certain infections (reactive arthritis). The best known disease in this group is ankylosing spondylitis (SPA), which is a chronic inflammation of the joints of the spine.
In each of these groups of diseases, the use of modern drug treatments (biological therapy) is very important, complemented by complex balneotherapy.
