INFORMATION ABOUT THE CITY AND THE SPA COMPLEX
A brief introduction to Hajdúszoboszló
Hajdúszoboszló is located in the Great Plain, in the north-eastern part of the Tiszántúl. It is 202 km from the capital of the country, and 21 km from Debrecen, the most important city in the Tiszántúl region. Hajdúszoboszló is located in the neighbourhood of Hortobágy, a significant suburb of which is Angyalháza, actually a part of Hortobágy. Our region is one of the driest in the country. The good quality farmland on its borders was the main source of livelihood for the population until the turn of the century.
1925. 26 October marked a new era in the life of our municipality. High-calorific natural gas erupted from a depth of 1,100 metres, bringing with it thermal water with a temperature of 73 degrees Celsius. The exploration of natural gas and thermal water was supervised by Dr. Ferenc Pávai Vajna Vajna, Chief Geologist. At first, only a hedge bath was built to make use of the medicinal water, and then from the mid-1930s the spa gradually began to be developed. The healing power of thermal water has made Hajdúszoboszló world famous.

Sights of our city
Belfry
The couple of Oborzil Edit and Jeney Tibor from Hajdúszoboszló donated a special collection of bells to Hajdúszoboszló. Their cast aluminium bells are made using a technology that is unique in the world. A bell tower was built over the collection by architect Zoltán Rácz. The building rests on four large folding columns meeting at a summit. In the shaft of a large, so-called. the world bell tolls.
The Kölcsey bell stands at the entrance, surrounded by medium-sized bells. Inside the house, in a small pond, are ten St Stephen’s bells with the King’s exhortations written in Latin. The Hungarian translation of the text is on the wall. The lake is fed by seven springs, symbolizing the unity of the seven settled Hungarian tribes into one nation.
The roof of the tent is surrounded by eleven idol-like carved columns, each depicting an important event in Hungarian history. The square behind the bell-house is surrounded by the colourfully painted sign-trees of László Győrfi (market, tree of life, miraculous deer). The belfry was inaugurated in 1999.
Our museums

The museum’s folk art exhibition offers an insight into the world of interior decoration, costume, pastoral life and folk customs, but visitors can also get a taste of contemporary folk crafts.
The museum now houses the collection of black ceramics exhibited in the former Fazekas House and made in the workshop there.

A International Modern Museum was founded by Joseph Kadar (József Kádár), an artist with ties to Szomboszló. From 1939 to 1954, he lived in Somboslo, then settled in Paris. It was there that he discovered electrography and went from figurative painter to experimental artist. He has given up the brush and instead uses a computer and photocopier to create his unique works. The museum opened in 1996 at 14 Bocskai Street. under the number. The material in the modern art exhibition is diverse, covering many movements, many genres and many techniques. THE XX. From the beginning of the 20th century to the present day, there is a series of paintings, sculptures, collages, unique and reproduced prints, electrographs and photographs. Joseph Kadar’s permanent collection includes internationally renowned artists.
Our churches
The oldest standing building complex in Hajdúszoboszló today is the reformed church and temple fortress. The church dates from the XV. century, while the fortress wall dates from the XVI. century. The keyhole-shaped holes in the latter prove that it was once built for defence. After the expulsion of the Turks, the fort lost its original purpose. During the Turkish-Tatar destruction the Reformed church was burnt down, and the ruined church was restored in the 1710s. The building was not spared the ravages of war. The tower was hit by a cannonball in 1944 and again needed renovation. Today, the church is a magnificent landmark in the city centre with an elevated effect. The church and the fort complex are protected as monuments in Hajdúszoboszló.
A roman catholic church construction began in 1777, but it was not consecrated until 1788. Externally, the church is a simple, single-nave building with a serene appearance. The interior of the church reveals a variety of Baroque architecture. The paintings in the triumphal arch are locally specific, which makes them special. They show a picture of the drilling rig used for exploring the thermal waters, and the so-called “spa”. a former view of the Great Basin. Two stone tablets in the hands of two angels hovering over the water read “God has placed the healing power in the healing waters of Hajdúszoboszló…” The building is a monument, its patron is King Saint László. At the entrance, a small plaque reminds visitors that Karol Wojtyla, former Cardinal-Archbishop of Krakow, Cardinal Archbishop of Krakow II, visited the church in 1978. John Paul.
A Greek Catholic Church was initiated by local Greek Catholics in the late 1980s. The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1992, after which construction began according to the plans of Ybl Prize-winning architect László Lengyel. The church, built in Byzantine style, was consecrated in 1994. 4 years later, the interior also houses the most revered attraction of Greek ritual churches, a beautiful iconostasis of 24 images. The panels on the wall depict saints, apostles and feasts.
