Want to get to know the natural treasures of Lake Tisza better? Visit the Lake Tisza Ecocentre, the main attraction of which is Europe's largest freshwater aquarium system, with a total capacity of 735,000 litres and underwater wonders on display, for a truly unique experience close to nature. Within its walls, it is like walking on the bottom of a lake.
The aquarium system is a self-contained ecosystem, showcasing 70 species of native fish, including carp, pike, roach, catfish and more. Another special feature of the exhibition is the tunnel, where you can enjoy the undistorted view of the fish zigzagging along the walls, and the 1.5 – 2 metre long specimens of the viza, a fish giant that once lived in our country, swimming overhead.
In addition to fish, you can also meet otters in the aquarium area. These funny animals will entertain guests three times a day during the summer during the Sightings.
The exhibition of native reptiles and amphibians takes us on a journey of discovery in a night forest. As these animals lead a hidden lifestyle during the day, the exhibition uses a reverse lighting programme to show the ogres, digger frogs, newts and salamanders on the hunt.
Thanks to the unusual technical solutions of the three-dimensional projection room, we can become part of the events on the screen and experience what a whole year is like from spring to winter on Lake Tisza. In the rustling jungle of reeds, you can explore the beauty of unspoilt nature by boat.
In the Macro World Earth Info room on the first floor, you can get an insight into the world of tiny creatures, both through microscopes and mini aquaria. On the interactive touchscreen monitor in the room, you can browse through text and visual information on topics related to the preservation and protection of our environment, the importance of nature conservation and the environmental problems of our planet, sometimes in a shocking but certainly in an attitude-forming way.
On the first floor of the building there is also a fun play house that imitates Lake Tisza, where you can “splash” in small blue balls instead of the water of the lake.
In the Ecocentre building, you can walk around a spectacular walkable glass map of the area from a “bird’s eye view”. But you can also go up to the 30 m high panoramic lookout tower in the tower of the main building, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of almost the entire Lake Tisza, the Bükk and the Mátra mountain ranges.
The more than 7 hectares of open-air park surrounding the main building with its animal shows – cormorants, pelicans, fallow deer, pheasants, turtles, golden eagles, foxes, sheep shows, owls, etc. – and playgrounds is both an amusement park and a zoo, while the Country House, a fishing lodge and a traditional poultry farm, which are part of the complex, offer a real journey back in time to the 19th century.
The Lake Tisza Ecocentre offers visitors a wealth of experiences all year round.
